@jim This was a great read—I really enjoyed it, Jim. I still use Blogger today; it was my first real blog. Since it’s free, I’ve set it up as a backup. All my posts get copied there. I even built a n8n routine for it. I think Google may have forgotten it still exists!

@alongtheray Looks really peaceful. Been enjoying your photos of the different areas you go to. But this is one of my favorites you posted.

@manton I find myself doing this too—I just chalk it up to good manners and the desire to keep practicing politeness, especially in today’s environment. And call me crazy, but I think the AI is more helpful—or at least it seems that way—when you add a “please.” Probably just a perception thing on my part.

I do think @jim and others are right to approach AI as a tool, but for me (and probably a lot of us), it’s a generational instinct to thank people—or even things—that help us, and to ask politely. The generation that grows up knowing nothing but “AI this” or “AI that” may not even think about saying “please” or “thank you.” I just hope that doesn’t carry over into how they treat real people.

@jim I know this must be incredibly overwhelming. Please know that we’re here, thinking of you and praying for you. I added you to my prayer list as soon as you first mentioned your cardiology visit. It sounds like you have a great medical team, and I know you have a strong family support system too. And of course you should share this journey on your blog—it’s therapy for you, and in a way, it’s therapy for us too, to be able to support you. Before you know it, this will be in the history books and you’ll be moving forward again—full throttle.

@jim Well dang, Jim—sorry to hear about the news, but I’m really glad they caught it in time. Sending you good thoughts and prayers for a smooth road ahead with whatever treatment is next.

Also… small world moment here: I’m also a Mitchell and also just got some tough heart news from a specialist cardiologist today (different issue—mine’s HOCM). Clearly the Mitchell hearts are trying to keep things interesting!

    Hang in there—we’ve got this. 💪❤️ #HeartBros

@manton Thanks Manton just got my latest export and imported here to Micro.blog.

@apoorplayer I can really relate to what you wrote here. I’m not retired, but I am in my 50s, and your post is one of several I’ve seen on Micro.blog (including one of my own) that reflects a broader question: why keep blogging when it’s hard to tell if anyone is actually reading?

Aren’t we all looking for a “tribe” to belong to? That’s why I chose the domain mitchelltribe.com. I had hoped my whole family—father, mother, brother, sisters, nieces, and nephews—would make use of the things I’ve been self-hosting or paying for. At least my parents use the “family” email, but no one has really taken to the Mastodon or Sharkey instances I set up.

I just want you to know that people do read your blog, even if they remain silent. Micro.blog doesn’t have likes, reads, or boosts, so it’s easy to feel unseen. But your words are heard. I truly hope you find your tribe—people who bring fulfillment and connection during your retirement and beyond.

That said, I still believe Micro.blog is the best-managed and most feature-rich platform I’ve found so far. The thoughtful design and community-focused philosophy really set it apart.

Until the next post, I bid you a fond and sincere adieu—parting is such sweet sorrow, as the Bard would say.

@manton I think Pocket has changed the export mode I went through everything and they gave me a zip file with a csv file. There was not a choice. I used the export link you have too.

@manton Thanks will definitely check that out :). Sorry should have checked first before I asked.

@manton, is there a way to import Pocket bookmarks into Micro.blog like you mentioned for Pinboard and Instapaper?

@hawaiiboy Hang in there you are not alone. A lot of people are thinking the same thing (or at least I am).

  • @MichaelBrownJr Looks good looking forward to trying this on my Samsung.

@numericcitizen I have downloaded this but haven’t tried it yet. They say it is just like ARC Browser and Firefox combined. zen-browser.app/download/ not sure if you were aware.

  • @bdsams.com You have my endorsement and agreement on that. 👍

@manton I’ve been thinking about this since reading your post. I didn’t realize all these issues existed with Mastodon, which has me wondering—should I abandon it or try something like Sharkey, which seems to address many of these problems? That said, Sharkey doesn’t appear to have widespread adoption yet.

I’m also not convinced that Bluesky is the answer. It doesn’t feel like the Twitter replacement we hoped for—at least, not like the pre-Musk Twitter that I really do miss.

Another thing I’ve been considering is whether Micro.blog would even support something like Sharkey if I made the switch. So, I’ve been doing a lot of pondering. Have I been wasting money running a single-user Mastodon instance that could be silenced without me even knowing it?

I still really like the core idea behind Mastodon. That’s what makes this all so frustrating.

  • @bdsams.com Hoping your yard held up. Know you were worried about that.

@manton I’m there with you and if this keeps going who knows if I have a job in 6 months. This guy I think is purposefully punishing the US just because he lost to Biden. This is his revenge on us the voters.
